Putnam County is located in southeastern New York. It is part of the Hudson Valley region and the New York Metropolitan Area. Putnam County has a total area of approximately 246 square miles of which 94% is land and 6% water. As of the census² of 2000, there were 95,745 people, 32,703 households, and 25,181 families residing in Putnam County, New York. The Hudson River comprises the county's western border. Putnam County ranks eleven in the nation for median household income, and the highest in New York state for median income for a family.
